Sewing Closet Redo: The Cabinet

I have a pretty great hubby dubs. He built this cabinet for me. Doesn't it look great! It give the closet a fantastic built in look and provides a bunch of storage for my bulky fabrics.  The top drawer is shorter than the bottom two, making it perfect for all those sewing notions that I need, but don't use often.  Like elastic and Velcro.

The wheels lock so I can open the drawers without pulling the cabinet halfway across the room.

I just love it. He built it in the same style as our nightstands. In my head this provides continuity in our house. I don't know that anyone else really cares about that.
Oo la la! I can slide it out from under the desk so I still have that workspace and can access my fabric storage in the wings of the closet.  But, wait...
SHAZAAM! That, my friends, is a drop leaf extension.  I wanted a drop leaf in the closet but unfortunately it just wouldn't work out. We talked through a bazillion plans and they all had major problems.  I had shown the Hubs this sewing cart and told him I liked the idea of the drop leafs that provided a portable workspace.

After moving as much of my stuff into the closet as possible, it became painfully obvious that I was going to need some additional storage space. I have too much stuff.  The cart from Remodelaholic is great, but didn't provide that needed storage so we redesigned a little.  Ok, a lot.

Didn't he do a fantastic job?  There are two deeper drawers - about 7" each and a shallow 3" drawer.  Oh, there's another feature on the drawers.
BAM! Pink drawers. He dyed the wood.  Why? Because he thought I'd like it.  Is he a sweetheart or what? 💕 The other great thing about the drawers is the hardware.  They're fully extending.  That means I don't have a drawer that opens half-way, loosing half the contents because I can't see or reach them.  I can open the drawer completely and survey my goods.

And there you have it, folks.  Aside from my dirty floors, what do you think?

  1. FYI: the drop leaf supports came from Rockler Woodworking. The casters and drawer slides can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot. The hinges are just ordinary piano hinges.

  2. Incredible talent and vision - if I changed my last name to McCarty would some of that rub off on me?? ;-)

  3. Wow! This is looking great, what a good use of space and it is so tidy! Ben, I continue to be impressed with your woodworking skills and the pink drawer touch shows not just skill at work here, but heart! Good teamwork, McC's!

Closet Redo: Coming Together

Good news! I finished the paper shelf! It only took, like, forever and three weeks.  Seriously, though. I didn't realize just how involved this design would be.  Each of the vertical dividers and individual planks and they had to line up with each other to look squared.  Then, since the shelf was constructed from plywood, I needed to do something to finish out the front.  That meant cutting a bazillion tiny pieces of wood to frame it out, glue & nail them in place.  Then I had to fill all of those tiny nail holes and sand the whole thing down flush.  I think it turned out well. This is the back of the shelf.  It's getting mounted to the wall so there needs to be strong anchor points.  Both of those pieces are screwed to the cabinet box on the side.  After a week of priming, sanding, painting, painting some more, and sanding some more, I got the shelf mounted! I'm quite happy with it.  Isn't it awesome? I need to d...

Closet Redo: Patching Things Up

Sunday, February 5, 2017 2:14 PM Hey y'all! I'm starting a little project and decided to start a blog to document everything and maybe give some others out there ideas.  I'll go ahead and put it out there that I have intentions of posting before & after photos to Pinterest for others and would appreciate it if you did, too.  Please also feel free to share this post and future posts. Some of your friends might have awesome ideas I can incorporate!  A little background: The Doctor and I bought a house a few years ago and have been slowly redoing rooms to match our lifestyle and taste.  I'll have to show you pictures of the Master Bathroom sometime.  It's gorgeous.  The Doctor did a fantastic job.  One of my longtime wishes has been to have my own sewing and crafting space that is magazine/Pinterest worthy.  While we do have two spare bedrooms, I've decided to turn one of the closets into my sewing/crafty space for several reason...
