Closet Redo: Spackle & Paint

You know what's a funny word?  Spackle.  Try saying it a few times.  Spackle spackle spackle.

Anywho.

Week one is in the books and I can't wait to show you the progress! I'm tickled with the paint color. It coordinates so well with the color of the future office. But, first things first. This week I was able to hit all of my work goals: spackle, sand and paint. It doesn't sound like much, but I'm working with limited time in the evenings. For some reason Scruggs wants me to play with him and the husband wants to eat supper. I don't get it.

My first challenge was containing all of the dust that was about to be created by the palm sander. I taped some plastic sheeting up around the closet opening. It worked really well overall. There's still a thin layer of dust all over everything in the room but that's because I'm a dum dum and didn't cover the gap between one of the doors and the door frame. Guess where all of the dust escaped. It still helped tremendously and I recommend trying it if you don't plan on clearing the room out.

Oh, and I didn't want to breathe in all of that dust so I had to get all set up with a mask. I hope no one from OSHA reads this because it definitely didn't fit.  And then I thought I would have enough time to go to the store after I sanded and before I needed to fix supper so I, uh, wore a shower cap to keep my hair clean.

I look pretty darn hawt! I see this becoming the new fashion trend next year.  Don't be jealous. You can look like this, too.  Maybe I'll do a little mid-week tutorial to show you how to achieve the look.

If you follow me on Facebook (if you don't, why not?) then you saw the teaser I posted of the paint.  In black and white.  I thought it was funny.  But I was probably the only one.  Here's the color version of that picture:

Isn't it a fun color!  It's girly and happy and bright and apparently I'm really a five year-old girl.  It's a fun and unexpected pop of color when the doors to the closet are open.  I wanted a bright fuschia pink, but it just didn't seem to go with the color of the office.

I love the colors together.  But it reminds me of something…  Oh, yeah!

I had come up with this logo four years ago and forgot about it.  Pretty serendipitous. Or my subconscious kicked in.  You know, whatever.

This week my goals are to get the bracing, table and pegboard cut, painted & installed.  Wish me luck!

Toots, y'all!

Knotty Guest

Hey everyone!  Guess what. You're in for a treat because The Hubs is doing a guest post today!  He's pretty darn talented in many areas, two of which are woodworking and mathematics.  So naturally he combined the two and made this sweet knot/cube diagram.  Below you'll get to read all the fun details of how he put it together.  I posted this project over the weekend and got several questions from people about it, so I thought I’d share some of the process in case anyone’s interested. You can find out more about where the object comes from here: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.314.4240 and here: https://arxiv.org/abs/0811.0225 Be warned….there’s math in them thar links! The process is pretty straightforward. To begin, I cut bars 1 inch x 1 inch, making sure they were long enough to get several of the final pieces out, without a lot of waste. Then I took them over the router table to round over the corners with a 1/4 inch r...

Mini Ironing Board Tutorial

Hey there folks! I'm still moving along on my closet redo but am getting to the point where I can start incorporating more craft time into my week.  This week I made a mini portable ironing board.  When sewing you have to iron constantly if you want your project to turn out well. Sometimes, though, it's just a huge pain the butt to set up that big ol' ironing board for two little 3" squares.  Raise your hand if you've forgone setting up the ironing board and then regretted it later. *raises hand*  Yeah, um... That's when it ends up looking homemade rather than handmade.  I saw this tutorial from Popsugar on Pinterest several weeks back and tucked the idea away for later.  It's a mini ironing board.  I made mine 15"x15" and it's perfect for the smaller projects.  I'm going to show some pictures of my process, but you should really check out their tutorial.  Materials 1/2" Plywood, cut to size 4...

Closet Redo: Coming Together

Good news! I finished the paper shelf! It only took, like, forever and three weeks.  Seriously, though. I didn't realize just how involved this design would be.  Each of the vertical dividers and individual planks and they had to line up with each other to look squared.  Then, since the shelf was constructed from plywood, I needed to do something to finish out the front.  That meant cutting a bazillion tiny pieces of wood to frame it out, glue & nail them in place.  Then I had to fill all of those tiny nail holes and sand the whole thing down flush.  I think it turned out well. This is the back of the shelf.  It's getting mounted to the wall so there needs to be strong anchor points.  Both of those pieces are screwed to the cabinet box on the side.  After a week of priming, sanding, painting, painting some more, and sanding some more, I got the shelf mounted! I'm quite happy with it.  Isn't it awesome? I need to d...
